I am so impressed with the stories coming out of Iceland these days. Is it just about football? No. I think it’s about more than that - it’s about ambition.
I hear a lot of talk these days about the need for ‘resilient’ communities, and ‘revitalizing’ communities. It frustrates me. Really? Is that ALL we want to be? Revitalized and resilient? Why not powerful and ambitious?
What if every community, every person, dreamed the way Iceland has?
And it’s not just about sports. What Iceland is doing is re-writing its story. It’s about ambition, and it’s about determination. Not giving up - no matter what. 12 times they tried to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. 12 times, before they made it! THAT is perseverance.
Many communities - and community organizations, I’d argue - play things very safe. They don’t take risks. At least, I think very few do.
Dreaming BIG!
If we really want to create the kind of communities we want, I think this is key. We need to dream HUGE! We need to be ambitious and determined.
And we need to do this with NO FEAR! Really. What have we got to lose? Things are not exactly going our way now. There are so many things that need to change.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has helped make this very clear.

Ocasio-Cortez did not think small. She did not give up. She did not play it safe. We need more of this ALL around the world.
It starts with each of us. We all have choices to make. Do we play it safe? Or do we dare to dream BIG?
